Welcome
This is the folio of independent freelance multimedia developer Steve Smith. With a couple of awards under my belt for some trick multimedia both in the UK and Australia (New Designers Winner 1998, MADC Silver 2004), there's plenty to look at here dating back to some antiques from '98. Nowadays I'm concentrating more on development and systems than design but still interested in graphic & broadcast related opportunities - especially if you want a flash based broadcast graphics system (my favourite sort of thing) or something unique & dynamic.

I have a blend of a high level of programming, design & interactive skills which have enabled me to work on some truly amazing projects, most of which you can see here.

Thatworks Flash Site

 NOV 2008
I developed this full-screen, scaling, as3 flash extravaganza over a 2 month period in collaboration with the very talented designer and animator Dan Reid. This was a test of both of our skills and I'm very happy with the result. This is a unique site for Thatworks in South Melbourne.

Save the Children : Lessons in Leadership

 JUN 2008
Actionscript 3 re-code of this stunning full-screen flash extravaganza for M&C Saatchi, Melbourne. I also remade most of the interactive elements in the chapters of this book. I would like to say that an enormous of amount of work had already been done on this amazing project with the visuals, all the animated elements, all the sound. I just rebuilt it as it had gotten a bit buggy and it was relaunched, after 2 weeks of solid coding, on 20 June 2008. Please click on the make a donation button and give wherever possible if you're feeling charitable! The amazing story of Eglantyne Jebb should definitely inspire you to do so... :)

Children Collide on 360Video

Check out http://www.childrencollide.com/
This is the new video clip from Children Collide - using the 360video player SeniorCreative developed for its client - Dean Poore at PanoramicVideo. I developed the player over an 18 month period for this client - and hooked him up with Johnny Mackay from the band and they took it from there to create this new clip which Universal records are touting as a world first. They called me a software wizard!

Blogger in Flash

Have recently created a flash module that renders out blogger posts for a new client. This extracts the blog from blogger using simplepie and spits out a name and value pair data string for flash urlloader. Then inside flash the images and text are loaded into dynamically created textfields. The clever part is I measure and monitor the load of the images using a loader and textfield.getImageReference() - I extract the Image ID's in the field using a string split very similar to a regExp. And when the image is loaded I wrap a specially measured linespacing textformat around the img tag in the textfield htmlText, based on the loaded image's pixel height. Subsequently I add consecutive blog posts underneath in a handbuilt scroller pane which scrolls with a handbuilt Scroller using nice Tweenlite easing.
