Welcome

This is the folio of independent freelance multimedia developer Steve Smith. With a couple of awards under my belt for some trick multimedia both in the UK and Australia (New Designers Winner 1998, MADC Silver 2004), there's plenty to look at here dating back to some antiques from '98. Nowadays I'm concentrating more on development and systems than design but still interested in graphic & broadcast related opportunities - especially if you want a flash based broadcast graphics system (my favourite sort of thing) or something unique & dynamic.

I have a blend of a high level of programming, design & interactive skills which have enabled me to work on some truly amazing projects, which you can see here.

Patrick Belford Gardens and Plantscapes

 JUN 2010
Patrick Belford has a great job. He makes some amazing garden and outdoor spaces. He wanted to showcase his folio of work with a simple site which can be browsed and navigated nicely using the iPhone touchscreen. So this is the result, and it uses SeniorCreative's templated iPhone friendly photography CMS system for the back and front-end. Graphics were designed and supplied by Andy O'Keeffe @studioalto thanks Andy great working with you.

Amanda Fordyce Photography Site

 APR 2010
Amanda Fordyce has an awesome photography folio and wanted a basic site in terms of design but it needed to work on an iPhone. This is the result. It makes use of SeniorCreative's content-management-system for the back-end, and the front end is a templated page which is easy to re-skin.

FLASH APPLICATIONS

LivePro Flowchart Flash App

 FEB 2010
Fullscreen Actionscript 3.0 flowchart creation tool coded by SeniorCreative. This chart builder (a bit like visio but in flash) was made especially for LivePro, on behalf of Sharpsushi. The system integrates into various process of the clients knowledge management database seamlessly, allowing charts to be added, edited and saved. This was a rebuild from an early actionscript project from 2002 and is as a result way smoother and more robust due to the AS3 application framework it now has. This is probably my best OOP structure to date. I am well proud of the adjustable double-elbow connectors.

Panoramic Video

 JAN 2010
Senior has developed a highly customised panoramic streaming video player for this fantastic client based in Melbourne. There is huge, exciting potiential for this piece of technology. We were originally contacted due to there being no decent cross-platform flash players on the market for panoramic video. This player has since evolved and been rebuilt a few times and now works using papervision3D. The project is very unique - and is going places so keep checking it out. You can follow this client on twitter at http://twitter.com/panoramicvideo. There is also now a LIVE version of this player reading flash streaming video which is way cool...

I developed this full-screen, scaling, as3 flash extravaganza over a 2 month period in collaboration with the very talented designer and animator Dan Reid. This was a test of both of our skills and I'm very happy with the result. This is a unique site for Thatworks in South Melbourne.

Save the Children : Lessons in Leadership

 JUN 2008
Actionscript 3 re-code of this stunning full-screen flash extravaganza for M&C Saatchi, Melbourne. I also remade most of the interactive elements in the chapters of this book. I would like to say that an enormous of amount of work had already been done on this amazing project with the visuals, all the animated elements, all the sound. I just rebuilt it as it had gotten a bit buggy and it was relaunched, after 2 weeks of solid coding, on 20 June 2008. Please click on the make a donation button and give wherever possible if you're feeling charitable! The amazing story of Eglantyne Jebb should definitely inspire you to do so... :)

Panoramic Video reports from SLAM rally

Panoramic video's flash player made by SeniorCreative today made it onto The Age reporting Melbourne's SLAM rally - watch http://bit.ly/panovideo_theage. This is a great achievement by all at Panoramic video and I am really proud to see my player/software running up on The Age's site. I hope it is the first of many new opportunities for this unique 360 interactive video player.

Panoramic Video Papervision3D

Pleased to announce I have now pretty much mastered papervision, learning it - in my opinion the best way possible - by using it on a real project. Have rebuilt the video player for panoramic video no longer using displacement maps inside flash but papervision materials, primitives and camera manipulation techniques. I bought tondeur's papervision essentials - anyone wishing to learn PV3D should do the same it makes things nice and easy. I had to delve right into the works of the debug camera and make some tweaks though to achieve what was needed. The player will be launched very soon and brings a much higher quality, performance and from a flash application point of view is now split up into properly separated AS3 classes.

Children Collide on 360Video

Check out http://www.childrencollide.com/
This is the new video clip from Children Collide - using the 360video player SeniorCreative developed for its client - Dean Poore at PanoramicVideo. I developed the player over an 18 month period for this client - and hooked him up with Johnny Mackay from the band and they took it from there to create this new clip which Universal records are touting as a world first. They called me a software wizard!
